Why listen, repeat, recall works

Better Korean is built on four ideas that research and experienced teachers agree on. Here's the short version, and how the app puts each one to work.

Taemin, a fictional study buddy
Taemin: “Ten minutes a day, every day. That's the whole secret. 화이팅!”

원칙

The four principles

  1. Step 1

    Learn Hangul first

The alphabet takes a few days, not months. Reading Hangul instead of romanization gives you the real sounds and makes every later step easier.

  2. Step 2

    Listen, then repeat

Shadow native audio: listen, then say it right after. Research on shadowing shows it improves how clear and natural you sound — rhythm and intonation included.

  3. Step 3

    Say it from memory

Once you can repeat it, test yourself from the English. Pulling a phrase out of memory (with feedback) makes it stick far better than repeating it again.

  4. Step 4

    Space your reviews

Review right before you'd forget: 10 minutes, a day, 3 days, a week, 3 weeks. A few minutes daily beats a long session — and keep new phrases to a pace you can sustain.

왜 둘 다?

Why repeat and recall

A study comparing the two found a trade-off. Repeating after a speaker gave better pronunciation during practice. Recalling from memory gave better results on later tests, both right away and after a delay.

So Better Korean does both, in order: repeat to get the sound right, then recall to make it yours.

How Better Korean applies it

New phrases: listen, then repeat

The audio plays as soon as you open a new phrase. Say it back until you score above 90. Romanization stays blurred so your eyes go to the Hangul.

Reviews: say it from memory

Learned phrases come back as English only. After you try, you hear the correct version to compare.

Spaced on autopilot

Passing pushes the next review out: 10 minutes, 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 21 days. Missing one sends the phrase back to listen-and-repeat. Next always picks overdue reviews first.

Hints before answers

Stuck on a review? A hint shows just the first syllable (감 _ _ _ _). A small cue keeps you recalling instead of reading.

Hear yourself

After every attempt, play your own recording next to the native audio. Hearing the gap side by side is the fastest way to close it.

Feedback per word

Gemini listens to your recording and scores every word, with a tip for the ones that need work.

매일

A daily routine that works

  • 5 min

Do every review that's due. Reviews first, always.

  • 5–10 min

Learn a few new phrases: listen, repeat, pass.

  • Anytime

Shadow Korean you enjoy — a drama scene, a song — out loud.
